Phonological Awareness and Literacy

Phonological Awareness Games & Phonemic Activities for Children

We might not always be aware of how much we rely on our phonological awareness on a day-to-day basis, but phonemic skills are the key to identifying and manipulating sections of spoken language.

Without phonological awareness, we would not be able to distinguish the sounds that come from other people’s mouths, and break them down into individual words that convey a clear message to us.

As an example, when someone says “it is sunny today”, we require multiple language skills in order to understand what was just said. This involves identifying that what we just heard is four separate words, and that two of those words are one syllable each while the other two are two syllables each.

Phonological awareness requires us to understand and separate the individual sounds within each word (“s”, “ah”, “n”, “e”).

Our selection of games helps to expand phonological awareness, through phonemic activities for the primary classroom

Typically, we begin to develop phonological awareness at an early age (often as young as two years old), but for children who are developing these skills at a slower rate, phonemic activities can help to gain an understanding of words, sounds and sequencing.

Children who can’t hear and manipulate the phonemes of verbally spoken words will also struggle with reading and writing, as phonemes relate to the letters in the alphabet. By engaging a child with games that target phonemics and phonological awareness, you can help to develop their language skills both verbally and in reading/writing.

Every item featured in our selection here has been specifically designed by experts to help children hone their phonemic skills in a fun and engaging way. We also stock a great range of toys and games for assisting with grammar and syntax, inferencing, questioning skills, pragmaticsand other aspects of language development.
