It’s no secret that some children learn some skills quicker than others. For children with autism, learning social and language skills can be particularly challenging. Therefore, it’s important for parents of children with learning difficulties to find effective teaching methods that will help their child learn these skills in an enjoyable and safe environment.
Learning flashcards are an excellent way to achieve this goal. Not only do flashcards help preschool and kindergarten children practise social and language skills through colour association, but they also provide some much-needed structure to their learning.
How do flashcards help children with autism?
A common difficulty for many children with autism is forming meaningful relationships with peers due to difficulty understanding social cues, such as facial expressions or body language. Flashcards are an effective way of helping children learn these complex social cues - through the use of vivid illustrations, flashcards can give children an easy-to-grasp understanding of certain social situations. In time, this process can help children understand how to best interact in those scenarios. For example, a card may show two figures talking to each other, illustrating various facial expressions or body language associated with positive interactions between people.
As for language skills, many children with learning difficulties struggle to express themselves verbally due to sensory processing issues or problems understanding abstract concepts like metaphors or idioms. By using pictures on flashcards as visual representations of words and phrases, it becomes easier for these individuals to remember new words and build up their vocabulary level over time. To use another example, a card could have a picture of a cat along with the word “cat” printed on it – allowing the child to make the connection between what they see (the cat) and what they hear (the word).
