Inferencing

Inference is a key skill that we use on a constant basis throughout the day, without being consciously aware of it. The ability to infer is to deduce or conclude something from evidence and reasoning, rather than from an outright statement.

For example, if you were to visit a friend’s house for dinner and when you arrived you saw that there are two place settings already laid out at the dining table, you would immediately infer:

• That it will be just the two of you dining together tonight
• That you’ll be taking a seat at one of the two place settings that are set up

If there’s red wine, garlic bread and parmesan cheese on the dining table, you might also infer that dinner is going to be Italian.

Learning how to infer things at an early age is extremely helpful, as it allows us to better understand social cues, hold more sophisticated conversations, and generally develop higher order thinking skills.
