WH Questions Games & Questioning Skills

WH questions games for speech therapy, classrooms and home

Asking and answering who, what, where, when and why questions is a building block for conversation, story comprehension and classroom learning. Many children need extra practice: some find “why” and “how” questions harder than “what” and “where”, and others answer quickly but miss the point of the question.

This range brings together games, card decks and activities that make WH practice feel like play, from picture cards for younger children to board games, bingo and inference cards for older students.

Frequently asked questions

What are WH questions?
WH questions start with who, what, where, when, why (and often how). They ask for information rather than a yes or no answer, so a child needs to understand the question and give the right kind of answer, such as a person, a place or a time.

Which WH question is usually hardest for children?
“Why” and “how” questions are usually harder than “what”, “who” and “where”, because they ask a child to explain a reason or a process rather than name something they can see.

Can I use WH question games in a classroom?
Yes. Bingo, board games and card games work well for small groups and literacy rotations, and the Quick Take Along books and Skill Strips suit one-to-one work.
